Call of Duty Black Ops 3 2 Player Campaign Ps4
It's a tough time to be a gamer that loves local multiplayer. Over the years, that elemental gaming experience of playing your favorite titles on the couch with your friends has become rarer and rarer, phased out instead for online multiplayer and sprawling single-player experiences. Unless your game says "
Just so we're clear, which modes support split screen and how many players?
In Black Ops 3, you can play all of our modes of play: Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies, in both local and online split-screen. You can play through the Campaign in 2-player split-screen, local and online. Both Multiplayer and Zombies support 4-player local split-screen, and 2-player split-screen online.
Did you have any trouble hitting performance targets with local multiplayer?
Split-screen gameplay will always present technical challenges, because it renders everything that you see on the screen two to four times, depending on how many players you have locally. So, of course, split-screen play pushes the limits of any generation's console technology. With Black Ops 3, we completely overhauled our graphics engine to support advanced features like deferred rendering, order-independent transparency, which is basically more and better-looking particles, volumetric FX and dynamic lighting. It's the power of this new technology, along with the greater capabilities of this generation of consoles and PC, that allows for a more scalable system to support split-screen play. In short, it's actually easier now than it has ever been, and we believe it is worth it for the fun social experience it provides for our players.
Do you have any data on how many players actually engage with local multiplayer?
The challenge with collecting data on split-screen play is that by nature of players who use it offline, we don't have any information about how they play the game. We do have a lot of data about how players play online, and we can extrapolate some information from that, but it does fall into the territory of "best estimates" and just feeling like it's the right feature to give to our fans. We believe there are a lot of players who play local split-screen with friends on the couch at home, in dorm rooms, at work, and we hear about it a lot from players through social media. It surprises even us sometimes how frequently people ask for it and thank us for continuing to provide it.
Every year it seems like you see less and less options for local multiplayer, especially in AAA titles. Why do you think that is? Call of Duty keeps supporting it. Why do you think this is a priority for the team?
I think it's the natural evolution of the game industry to go online, which is where the majority of gamers reside now. Most games now have an online component, in fact, we've made Black Ops 3 completely playable online!
As a matter of studio philosophy, we also believe that, regardless of advancement in online technology, there are always going to be players who just enjoy playing the game couch co-op style with friends and family in the living room. We want to support that experience and all styles of play, so technology isn't even the driving factor in that kind of decision. At the end of the day, it's all about player behavior.
Treyarch has a long history of emphasis on strong social systems in our games, because we believe fundamentally that the game is most fun when played with friends, whether online or offline.
What, in your opinion, is fun about local multiplayer in contrast to online?
Playing locally with friends in the same room is just a completely different experience than playing with friends online. It's more playful, in a way. I remember back to the earliest days of console gaming when I was a kid, playing Combat on the Atari at my friend's house, or in college playing Goldeneye on the N64. In many ways, it's the purest form of social gaming, being in the same room with people whose company you enjoy. I have a lot of nostalgia for that, and I believe it's an important part of our gaming ecosystem. The team at Treyarch shares that sentiment, and that's why it's a feature that's still very important to us and the games that we make, regardless of how much emphasis we put into online.
